During the Year 2022 elections Werugha ward elected Hon.Gerard Mwandau and is currently serving as MINORITY LEADER & MCA Werugha Ward.

Projects

Cheques worth 1.4 million in grants have been issued to community groups in Werugha Ward courtesy of the County Empowerment Program, which is in line with H.E. Governor Andrew Mwadime’s manifesto on empowerment, economic growth, and community sustainability.

Present were the CECM Youth, Gender, Sports, and Social Services Shedrack Mutungi, Werugha Ward MCA Genard Mwandau, and the sub-county administrator Ann Mwatika.

Based on reports from the Taita Taveta County Government, here are the projects,, and developmental activities in Werugha Ward from 2022 to the present:

Water and Sanitation Projects

  • Kishenyi-Kishushe Water Supply Project (2025): As of January 2025, this project is 98% complete, funded at Ksh 60 million by the Water Sector Trust Fund and the County Government. It serves 18,000 residents with water kiosks in Sangenyi, Kishushe, and Mlilo.
  • Shanga/Msangarinyi Water Project (2022): Ongoing construction involving the rehabilitation of over 600 meters of pipeline, installation of 10,000-liter tanks, and upgrading of water intakes at Shanga and Ngimenyi to serve Kiteghe, Msangarinyi, Ndonga, and Kitukunyi villages.
  • Expansion of Water Services: Continued focus on water accessibility in Wundanyi Sub-County, including plans for a 50-cubic-meter storage tank at Fombe to extend supply to Kishenyi, Saghasa, and Mwakishimba. 
  • Road Maintenance (2025): Ongoing grading, murraming, and construction of slabs and culverts on roads including Mwanguwi-Mghange, Mghange-Mwaroko, and the Nyache-Funju road.
  • Mlughi Bridge (2025): Construction of a bridge in the Wanganga area.
  • Road Clearing (2025): Bush clearing on the Mbale-Werugha-Mghange road.
  • Rehabilitation of Roads (2022): Rehabilitation of the Msau-Mbale-Werugha-Mgange-Bura road aimed at boosting agricultural transport. 

Education and Social Infrastructure

  • Werugha Market (2024): Tender for the completion of the Werugha Market (Negotiation No: 765983).
  • Educational Facilities (2022): Construction of a 200-capacity dormitory at Shimbo Secondary, a modern science laboratory at Canon Kituri Secondary, classrooms at Ngulu Primary and Mwakishimba Primary, and renovation of classrooms at Werugha Primary, funded by NG-CDF.
  • Werugha VTC (2022): Ongoing development of the Vocational Training Centre to boost local skills.
  • Bursary Disbursement (2022/2023): Ksh 5 million in bursaries was allocated to the ward to support students. 

Agriculture and Economic Empowerment

  • Agricultural Support: Distribution of Macadamia seedlings to boost agroforestry and farming income.
  • Youth and Women Empowerment: Distribution of, or support for, local self-help groups.
