Kenyan youth constitute a bigger percentage of the growing population.Kenya has a large youth population, with approximately 75% of the total population being under the age of 35 and over 35 million people in this age group, according to the 2019 census. Nyota Fund

The “Nyota Fund” is a key component of Kenya’s National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project,which aims to empower youth by providing business capital,job training and financial literacy. The project, funded by the World Bank, offers a Sh50,000 business grant to help young people start or expand businesses. It also encourages savings. 

Project details

  • Purpose: To address youth unemployment and promote entrepreneurship in Kenya.
  • Business support: Provides Sh50,000 in non-refundable grants to eligible youth for business capital.
  • Entrepreneurship: Supports young entrepreneurs through grants, mentorship, and market linkages.
  • Savings: Encourages saving by automatically enrolling participants in the NSSF’s Haba Haba Savings Scheme.
  • Target audience: Vulnerable youth in Kenya, with specific eligibility criteria for age, education, and employment status.

Government-led initiatives

Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF): Provides loans and business development support to youth-owned enterprises, aiming to create employment through enterprise development.

Youth Empowerment Centers (YECs): “One-stop shops” that offer a wide range of services, including ICT access, entrepreneurship training, guidance and counseling, and a platform for government activities involving youth.

The Kuna Form portal

The Kuna Form portal offers a centralized platform where young people can view, register for, and share various opportunities ranging from employment and internships to training and mentorship programs both in the country and abroad. The portal also has skills and funding opportunities.

Youth can access the portal via kunaform.nyckenya.go.ke. One is required to register using a valid email address.
