The “Wakujaa” development agenda, led by Andrew Mwadime, has driven a series of impactful initiatives in Challa Ward, Taita Taveta County. These projects place a strong emphasis on food security, agricultural value addition, and community empowerment, positioning the ward as a key contributor to the county’s economic growth.
Key Projects in Challa Ward
Water and Irrigation
- Uthiani Borehole Water Project: Providing a reliable water source for irrigation-based farming, significantly boosting agricultural productivity in the Challa area.
- Irrigation Expansion: Challa is a major beneficiary of the county’s irrigation expansion strategy, leveraging water resources such as Lake Chala to reduce dependence on rainfall and enhance year-round farming.
Agriculture and Value Addition
- Sunflower Processing: Installation of sunflower processing machinery to support local edible oil production and increase farmer incomes.
- Post-Harvest Support: Promotion of cold storage and processing solutions for tomato farmers to minimize post-harvest losses and stabilize market supply.
Community Empowerment
- Grants and Support: In May 2024, community groups received grants totaling KSh 5 million, along with essential event equipment such as tents and chairs to support local initiatives and social functions.
- Livestock Distribution: Distribution of Galla goats across the Taveta region, including Challa Ward, to improve livestock quality and strengthen household incomes.
